3D-printing, ook wel additive manufacturing genoemd, maakt het mogelijk producten laag voor laag op te bouwen, rechtstreeks vanaf een digitale file. Hierdoor zijn nieuwe, betere producten te ontwerpen en te fabriceren, die via traditionele methoden onbereikbaar zijn. Tevens is het mogelijk producten dicht bij de plaats van gebruik (on location) te produceren, wat het aantal transportkilometers vermindert en daarmee de CO2-uitstoot en het brandstofgebruik.
